Preparing Your Car for Florida Summer
Florida summers bring extreme heat that can stress your vehicle in ways cooler climates don't. A little preparation can help prevent breakdowns during the hottest months.
Check Your Cooling System
Your engine's cooling system works overtime in summer heat. Have it inspected before temperatures peak:
- Check coolant level and condition
- Inspect hoses for cracks or bulges
- Test the thermostat operation
- Check the radiator for leaks or clogs
- Ensure the cooling fan works properly
Overheating is one of the most common summer breakdowns—and one of the most preventable.
AC System Inspection
A working AC isn't just about comfort in Florida—it's a safety issue. Temperatures inside a car can reach dangerous levels quickly without cooling.
Signs your AC needs attention: - Weak or warm air from vents - Unusual noises when AC runs - Musty odor from vents - AC cycles on and off rapidly
An AC system check can identify low refrigerant, leaks, or component issues before you're stuck in traffic without cold air.
Battery Check
Heat actually degrades batteries faster than cold. Florida's year-round heat means batteries often don't last as long as they might up north.
Have your battery tested, especially if it's more than 3 years old. A failing battery often gives little warning before it leaves you stranded.
Tire Pressure
Hot pavement increases tire temperatures, which increases pressure. Check your tire pressure in the morning before driving:
- Overinflated tires have reduced contact with the road
- Underinflated tires generate more heat and wear faster
- Both conditions increase blowout risk in extreme heat
Fluid Levels
Heat accelerates fluid breakdown. Check and top off: - Engine oil - Transmission fluid - Brake fluid - Power steering fluid
These fluids help cool and lubricate vital components. Low levels in summer heat can cause accelerated wear or damage.
Emergency Kit
Summer breakdowns often happen at the worst times. Keep an emergency kit in your car: - Water (for you, not just the radiator) - Phone charger - Basic tools - Flashlight - First aid kit
A few minutes of preparation can prevent hours of problems during Florida's toughest driving season.
